How to Migrate From 2003 To 2008 R2 Part 2: Print Server

In Part 1 we moved the File Server Role, in Part 2 we’ll tackle the Print Server Role!

So you need to get your printers of that ageing 2003 box and onto a shiny new Windows Server 2008 R2 machine, here’s how:

Firstly, install the Print and Document Services role from the Server Manager.

Next, open Print and Document Services and expand out the Printer Management node. Right click it and select Migrate Printers and follow the wizard, simple!

Note, to allow XP and 2003 machines to be able to access the new printers you will need to add the following to the registry:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print /v DnsOnWire /t REG_DWORD /d 1
