How to convert VMWare Machines For Use In Hyper-V

So you’ve been tinkering around with VMWare and you fancy covering all bases and trying out Hyper-V for a while but you can’t mount your vmdk files. Don’t worry, all is not lost!

Firstly, before you remove VMWare power up your virtual machines and remove the VMWare Tools before shutting them down again.

Secondly, go here and install the the free VMDK2VHD converter.

Open it and navigate to your chosen .vmdk, pick a destination and then click convert.

Open your Hyper-V Management console and create a new machine setting whatever specifications you require but instead of creating a new hard disk, choose ”Use an existing hard disk” then finish the wizard.

Power up your new machine, it may take a while on the fist go as it installs the new drivers needed, and install the integration tools using the “Actions” menu in the Hyper-V Management Console.

Easy!
