How to Search the Contents of Unknown Filetypes and Extensions in Server 2003 and XP

Ever wished that Windows search could search inside unrecognized files? Here’s a handy little tip if you’re running XP or Server 2003 that will let you search inside all files regardless of whether their extension is registered or not.

Open Regedit.exe and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet\Control\ContentIndex\
  • Double click on: FilterFilesWithUnknownExtensions
  • Change the value to 1 and ‘ok’ it.
  • Reboot

Bare in mind that it will slow down your search and indexing quite a bit so it’s worth changing it back to a zero when you’re finished.
